| It’s with regret that we are offering our family farm of over 50 years to the
market. It is time for us to move on.
Kleinbank is located on the popular Roggeveld Plateau in the Karoo, a short
drive from the historic town of Sutherland known for its
international renowned SALT observatory, bustling tourism industry and
extensive sheep farming. It is about 450km from Cape Town, an easy 4 hour drive
along good national highways. The farm is situated 8km from town via a
(presently) 4x4 route, or about 32km from town by road for
other vehicles. The short route is very scenic and could be upgraded for normal
vehicle access if so chosen.
The land offered consists of two adjacent blocks of land (separate titles to be
sold together) and is approximately 1204 hectares in area. The land was
traditionally used as seasonal grazing for sheep.
The farmland is typical Karoo landscape, stony by nature, with rocky ridges and
outcrops spread over the farm. Depending on seasonal
rainfall, the natural springs are used to water stock and limited irrigation.
The river flows during the rainy season and is spring fed
over summer. Vegetation is a mixture of typical Karoo bush and other plant
species suitably adapted to the cooler climatic conditions of the
high Roggeveld Plateau. It is semi-arid country with winter rainfall between May
and October. Expect winter snow and mild summers. The farm
and surroundings is rich in natural fauna and flora. The wider area has
traditionally been home to migratory small game (springbok,
klipspringer, rheebok, baboon, porcupine, rabbit, dassie, lynx, reptiles, etc),
During spring, a variety of wild flowers come into
bloom to supplement the green Karoo shrubbery. Great for nature lovers and the
outdoors type.
The historic homestead was once home to DC Esterhuyse one of South Africa’s
renowned poets. The house is of sound structure but
requires some TLC to restore it to its former glory in the true Roggeveld style.
It has 3 bedrooms, 2 living areas, kitchen and
bathroom. The ceilings are of solid hardwood and can be a great feature. The
house has a phone connection, but no electric power.
Other infrastructure includes a large shed, kraal, outbuilding, sink dam with
wind pump, boundary lines and inner camp fences.
The farm has some pear and quince trees, a poplar grove, and an irrigation patch
near the river for your home produce or some lucern.
There are also a few hectares which could be used to grow additional
pasture/lucern (flood irrigated from spring in the past),
Besides the traditional use as summer grazing for small stock, the farm has
great potential for alternative small scale agricultural
use, or for someone with aspirations to tap into the lucrative tourism market.
Possibilities:
• Investment property
• Family hideaway/holiday farm
• Rented accommodation
• Game farming & hunting
• Adventure tourism (Rambling, Camping, Cycling, MotoCross, Nature education)
• Scenic tourism (Observatory, Flowers, Snow experience, Spring tours)
• Sheep farming/Leased summer grazing (always in demand)
